Mariya Vasilyeva was born in Kiev in 1993 and relocated to Germany at the age of twelve. The colliding conceptions of womanhood and self-determination are reflected in her artistic work. Besides that, she uses fairy-tale motifs, iconoclastic symbols, which subsequently serve as an ironical and critical cross-reference to contemporary trends within the digitalized economy, pornography and the entertainment industry. Vasilyeva studied fine arts at the Academy of Fine Arts Munich and at the University of Applied Arts Vienna. She lives and works in Vienna and Berlin. Her video works have recently been shown at Ground Solyanka, Moscow, Krinzinger Projects, Parallel Vienna, Kunstverein Fürstenfeldbruck and Kunstraum Klingental, Basel. In 2019 Vasilyeva received the Ö1 Talent Scholarship and in 2020 a residency at Kunstarkaden Kempten.
